Directed By: William Osetek

Winner of three Tony Awards, “GYPSY” is considered by many critics to be the greatest American musical ever written. “Gypsy “ is based on the memoirs of Gypsy Rose Lee, a famous burlesque stripper. This show tells the story of Rose, an overbearing stage mother who is determined to break into the big time by pushing a vaudeville career onto her two daughters.

Rob and I adopted our adorable cat at a great local shelter called Felines and Canines. We have been working with Abby and crew for over 5 years helping them with web and marketing tools. Our favorite work with them was just recently. We designed a website and new logo for them. Check it out:

Here is more info about Felines & Canines:

Felines & Canines was originally founded in 1977 as Felines Inc.; a licensed, cage-less, no-kill cat shelter located on the north side of Chicago. As a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, we are funded through adoption fees, fundraising events, foundations, and the generous tax-deductible donations of caring individuals like yourself. We do not receive any federal or state funding.

Up until January 2012, Felines Inc. has operated as a cat-only shelter caring for approximately 130 cats and kittens in our two-story house. After extensive thought, soul-searching and preparation, we made the decision to renovate and expand our facility in order to care for up to 200 cats/kittens and add a wing to house approximately 20 dogs/puppies – officially becoming Felines & Canines! Our mission always has been, and will continue to be: providing a safe and loving shelter to abandoned, injured, abused and neglected animals until their permanent adoptive home is found. We strengthen the human/animal relationship through counseling, education, and compassion.

Our goal is to find the right lasting and loving home for each of our residents. We work carefully with our adopters to find the right companion for them, with the understanding that a lifelong relationship is about to begin. Our staff follows up on all adoptions and is always available for consultations to help ease the animal’s transition into his or her new home. All animals admitted to Felines & Canines are examined by a vet, spayed or neutered, and kept up-to-date on all vaccines. Most of the procedures are carried out on the premises by a skilled team of vets and vet techs.

True to our no-kill policy, all “adoptable” animals are given the time, love and care needed to find their permanent home. We never euthanize for time or space purposes, and only perform humane euthanasia’s in the event of extreme, untreatable illness or aggression. If you would like to be a part of our life saving mission, whether as a donor, a volunteer, or an adopter, please contact us at (773) 465-4132. We invite you to tour our shelter and meet the Felines & Canines family.

Tartuffe

By Molière
Adapted by Ranjit Bolt
Directed by Peter Robel

In the midst of societal upheaval, when the lines between church and state are being drawn between those for whom religion is the bedrock of society and a younger generation eager to accept change, comes the charlatan Tartuffe. Masquerading as a man of God, Tartuffe worms his way into the life of pious family patriarch Orgon and is soon trying to make off with the man’s wealth, his daughter, and even his wife! Though the rest of the family goes to hilarious lengths to show Orgon the error of his ways and expel Tartuffe from their home, the con man always seems to be one step ahead of them.

Using steampunk (a scifi subgenre that mixes Victorian history and aesthetic with futuristic steam-powered technology) as a backdrop, BoHo’s production mirrors the tumultuous societal landscape of 17th century France as a world that at once seems both familiar and alien, when old and new exist side by side. Without losing any of Molière’s wit, BoHo’s Tartuffe makes it obvious why a man would desperately believe the lies of a swindler over the word of his own family. Continuing our season-long exploration of the Bohemian pillars of truth, beauty, freedom, and love, Tartuffe explores the pillar of truth through the eyes of a liar.

Directed by J Nicole Brooks

April 9, 1947

Baseball’s Opening Day is one week away, and Branch Rickey, General Manager of the Brooklyn Dodgers, will call up Jackie Robinson to break the color-barrier and play as the Major League’s first black ballplayer. If he does, Robinson will face loud and heated opposition from virtually every owner, manager, and player in baseball – and it won’t be a cakewalk with the fans, either. Who will be his allies if he makes the most daring and important play of his life?

Award-winning Ensemble Member J. Nicole Brooks (Black Diamond, Fedra: Queen of Haiti) directs this dazzling fast-ball script by Ed Schmidt. When 1947’s biggest African American personalities – baseball great-to-be Jackie Robinson, boxer Joe Louis, entertainer Bill “Bojangles” Robinson, actor and activist Paul Robeson – meet, ideas and ideals clash and sparks fly, and America’s national pastime will never be the same.

Wednesday, I had the honor to attend one of the final performances of Elizabeth Rex at Chicago Shakespeare. It’s based on the CBC Mini-series (or the mini-series is based on the play). Either way, the woman who originated the role of Elizabeth was in this production.

Here is more information.

On the eve of the beheading of her court favorite and rumored lover, the Earl of Essex, Queen Elizabeth was entertained with a royal command performance by Shakespeare and his company. Upon this obscure historical fact, one of Canada’s most acclaimed playwrights, Timothy Findley, imagines this daring and original drama. Longing for distraction, the Queen visits her stables where the actors are lodged for the night. There she finds the man who plays Shakespeare’s leading ladies, and in their passionate confrontation, the actor and his Queen come to shocking revelations about sexuality, identity and love.

Approximate Running Time: 2 hours, 10 minutes (includes intermission)
